INDIA - In order to promote fishing and aquaculture in the state, Punjab is looking to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Andhra Pradesh (AP).
Punjab is seeking assistance from AP in the field of fish hatcheries, fish rearing and post-harvest technology, the chief minister of Punjab, Prakash Singh Badal told Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu who was on a visit to Punjab in Chandigarh recently.
Even though Punjab has the highest per hectare fish production of 9,076 kg, as against the national average of nearly 4,000 kg, it does not have latest technology on fish breeding and hatcheries.
As Andhra Pradesh is the leading state in fishing all over the country, Mr Badal also asked Mr Naidu to send a team of experts and progressive fish farmers who could visit Punjab and advise their farmers on the matter of fish technology.
Apart from experts, Mr Badal also requested Mr Naidu to depute a few retired fisheries experts and scientists to utilise their services for harnessing maximum potential from the fisheries sector.
The chief minister also said that the state had recently launched a pilot project of raising modern fish farms over an area of 600 acres which would serve both as a model as well as a demonstration farm for prospective fish farmers.
Mr Naidu assured the Punjab CM of all possible help and support for the adoption of best practices in fisheries for supplementing the income of fish farmers through replicating its successful model of fisheries in the state
