"P. stylirostris (Blue shrimp) – A likely future species for shrimp aqua farming in India"

"Penaeus stylirostris" is an inhabitant of the Western Pacific Coast of Latin America from Peru in the south to Mexico and is a native of the Central and South American Mexico to Peru, occupying the same distributional range as of P.vannamei. Recently, it has been demonstrated that there are at least six morphologically and genetically distinct populations of P. stylirostris in the Gulf of California and Mexico Culture of P. stylirostris in Latin America is largely confined to Mexico.
Experimental introduction of SPF super shrimp P.stylirostris has been made into various countries since 2000, but the only country to develop an industry to date has been Brunei. P. stylirostris has several advantages such as it can grow fast upto 20grams in weight, tolerant to low temperatures enabling it to be cultured in the cold season and is resistant to TSV. Through, selective breeding stocks of the shrimp which are resistant to IHHN virus are also developed with higher survival rates, observed in hatcheries (about 50 to 60%). P.stylirostris can grow to larger size and will receive good market price internationally.
