Gulf shrimp landings in May and for the year were well above 2014 levels but were down compared to the five-year-average. Now with Louisiana's spring shrimp fishery shut, landings and inventories are likely to decline until the fishing effort picks up again sometime in August.
Fishermen hauled in 10.1 million pounds of Gulf shrimp for the month of May, a 78 percent increase compared to the same time in 2014. For the year, the Gulf catch is sitting at 20.1 million pounds, 34 percent higher over last year.
