NOAA Regional Administrator John K. Bullard on Friday advanced the possibility that the $2.5 million needed to pay for at-sea monitoring for the remainder of the 2015 fishing season could come from the $10 million remaining in the third segment of federal fishery disaster aid.
“The states still have about $10 million in the third bin,” Bullard said.
“That would be an eligible use of those funds.” The third bin of the approximately $33 million allocated to the five coastal New England states and New York last year initially was earmarked for a permit buyback and boat buyout program that would allow fishermen to leave the industry with some economic benefit.
