Vietnam is taking the lion’s share of Ecuador’s shrimp exports, while Ecuadorian sales to the European Union (EU) are down and those to the USA are flat.
In May 2015, Ecuador exported 66.2 million pounds of shrimp, an all-time monthly record and 15 percent over this year’s current monthly average of 57.3 million pounds and 30 percent over the 2014 monthly average.
Through May 2015, Ecuadorian shrimp exports to its top-five markets were up 13.7 percent to 279.6 million pounds. That’s a 33.7 million pound increase over the same period in 2014.
This year, the Asian market, specifically Vietnam, has been the beneficiary for Ecuador’s hefty increase in shrimp production. Asia’s market share for Ecuadorian shrimp has climbed to 42.4 percent—or 118.4 million pounds. Of that, exports to Vietnam accounted for 106.6 million pounds, or 90 percent, nearly double the amount exported to Vietnam during the first five months of 2014.
Since 2013, Ecuador’s shrimp exports have changed drastically. Both the EU and USA shares have declined while exports to Asia have shown dramatic growth, mostly because of the surge in exports to Vietnam.
The EU market, which was Ecuador’s premiere export destination two years ago, has eroded from 42.2 percent in 2013 to 27.4 currently. By volume, Ecuador’s exports to Europe are down about 15 percent from last year.
Meanwhile, Ecuador’s sales to the USA were flat during the first five months of the year, down about 2 percent or 1.5 million pounds. Like the EU market, the USA market share for Ecuadorian shrimp has also shrunk over the last two years.
